Many a mama will tell you that we mothers thrive on consistency. And so, evaluating our routines is an important consideration when it comes to feeling our best. As the temperatures rise and the days grow longer, there are a handful of habits that you should consider implementing into your summer morning routine.

Make your bed

For most people, your bed accounts for about 35 percent of your bedroom, if not more. Your bed is the center of your room, the focal point. So, it naturally follows that a messy bed has the power to make your entire room look messy. On the other hand, a neatly made bed can instantly make your room look put-together, even if the level of cleanliness around the rest of your space leaves a bit (or, you know, a lot) to be desired.

Drink 1 liter of room temperature water

One liter might sound like a lot, but think of it this way: Your body hasn’t been hydrated for about 8 hours while you’ve been asleep (or up all night with a newborn). Before you dive into your coffee or tea for the day, drink 1 liter of room temperature water, ideally with lemon or a bit of apple cider vinegar. Warmer days mean you'll likely be sweating more than usual, so it’s important to hydrate more than usual, too. And if you’re breastfeeding, you definitely will want drink up to help fuel your milk supply.

Sit in child’s pose outdoors

Sunshine, fresh air, and stretching are all crucial components of a healthy morning routine. Combine the three by taking a trip outside to start your morning. After you drink your water, head outside to your backyard or patio and breathe in the fresh air and feel the sun on your skin. Then, spend some time in child’s pose to help stretch your muscles and get your blood flowing. Child’s pose is one of the best stretches you can do because it calms and relaxes the body, as well as slows the mind and opens the hips.

Take a cold shower

Although it might take some adjusting to, a cold shower is actually incredibly beneficial to your overall wellbeing. You don’t have to submerge yourself in the icy depths to receive the benefits, though, so gradually work up to larger stints to avoid feeling frozen.

Make a hearty plant-based breakfast

You don't necessarily need milk or eggs to have a healthy breakfast. Most of us get plenty of protein at other times throughout the day. Try sticking with a purely plant-based breakfast this summer. Instead of animal products, opt for bananas and almonds or avocados. A bonus benefit is that these foods require zero prep time (aka no need to turn on the stove and heat up your house!).
